Varied correspondence, notes, engravings, original watercolors, and one photograph, relating to Somerset, England, particularly Glastonbury and environs. Correspondents include: Henry Craik, Bristol philanthropist; W.H.P. Gore Langton, M.P. for West Somerset; and various other Somerset residents. Topics are varied, and include legal and business matters and social life. One group of 23 letters were written by John Whitehead, cheese-monger near Glastonbury, and his customers in London, Bristol, Reading, and other cities; these letters detail business activities, prices, and contain comments on the quality of the cheeses. Another group of letters relates to estate matters in Cheddar (Somerset), and Aston Somerville (Gloucestershire). Large photograph of abbey barn (Glastonbury) was taken in early twentieth century.

John Whitehead, son of William Whitehead, cashier of Newark Banking and Insurance Company, entered the mercantile profession in New York. He later moved to Mobile, Alabama and was a resident of Key West from 1824-1832, when he moved to New Orleans. Returning to New York, John Whitehead held the vice-presidency of a leading insurance company. He died on August 29, 1864. His brother, William A. Whitehead, served as an executor of his will.
